Extremophilic Microalgae

Current and former phycology Lab researchers have worked both locally and throughout the world, including about 120 thermal and acidic sites of Italy; Central America; Iceland; Indonesia and Turkey. Our work is centered primarily on microalgal communities from thermo-acidic habitats, with a focus on Cyanidiophyceae. Macroevolutionary studies integrate aspects biogeography and geography in a phylogenetic context to answer questions related to the world diffusion of Cyanidium, Galdieria and Cyanidioschyzon. We collect algae from these environments, culture and characterize them by microscopy, DNA extraction/sequencing and ecophysiological tests.
